Summary

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas tells the story about a nine year old boy who lives in Berlin. Bruno is an innocent young boy who experiences the wrath of the Germans in WW2. Bruno arrives home one day and notices the maid packing his clothes. Bruno doesn’t want to leave Berlin as he loves exploring and enjoys his friends' company but his father’s work is much more important. Their family move to a house near Auschwitz where Father can address his work more thoroughly. In his usual inquisitive manner, Bruno notices other people working over the fence in an area where he is prohibited from going. Anyway, Bruno goes searching for answers. He then meets Shmuel, a boy of the same age. Bruno becomes familiar with Shmuel and their friendship grows while talking through the barbed wired fence of the concentration camp. Bruno and Shmuel become good mates. Meanwhile, Mother doesn't enjoy "Out-With" and towards the end of the book realises the truth of the grim practices of the German's at the camp. Somehow, Father doesn't agree that they should go back to Berlin and argues that he is unable to leave the duties which the Fuhrer personally set for him. Bruno then agrees to join Shmuel in searching for his father in the camp.  Will their plan work?? Will they find Schmuel's father?? This is a fantastic book which highlights the importance of WW2 in the shaping of world history.
