| Biography John Boyne was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1971. He studied English Literature at College where he was awarded the Curtis Brown prize for Creative Writing. His books in his early career were mainly short stories tallying 70. He has produced seven novels which are published in 41 languages. He is currently working on his eighth novel. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas was also made in to a film. The novel won many awards including two Irish book awards, the Bisto book of the year, and won a few International awards. It has sold more than 5 million copies and was the fifth highest selling novel in 2008. |
John Boyne and His Writing Techniques
Repetition: John Boyne uses repetition on several occasions throughout the novel. It is used to create an emphasis on certain parts of the novel or important parts in the story. Using structural patterning is an important way to list events that happen in the novel in their order. Some examples from the novel include: ‘That led’ repeated itself 3 times on page 66. ‘Down’ repeated itself three times on page 9. Both these examples from the novel highlight events and how they happen in order.
